A funeral service for George F. Ridgeway, 69 of Heath will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 18, 2016 in the Newark Chapel of Vensil & Chute Funeral Home with Pastor Steven D. Osborne officiating. Burial will be in Wilson Cemetery with military honors by the Licking County Veterans Alliance.

Mr. Ridgeway died Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at Mt. Carmel East Medical Center, Columbus. He was born May 29, 1946 in Newark to the late George Parker and Dorothy Pauline (Farmer) Ridgeway.

Mr. Ridgeway was an Ohio licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer in the area for over 35 years. The past ten years he has been an investigator with the Licking County Coroner’s Office. He had also operated Genesis Mortuary Services. Mr. Ridgeway served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era with the 197th Attack Helicopters Unit. He was a 1965 graduate of Newark High School, received an Associate Degree from Franklin University and a 1973 graduate of the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science.

Mr. Ridgeway co-founded the local Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter #55. He returned to Vietnam in 1989 to aid in the release of the remains of a Licking County Veteran. He was a member of Ft. Industry Lodge #144 F & AM; Ft. Meigs Chapter 29, Royal Arch Masons of Ohio; LaFayette Lyttle Commandery #77, Knights Templar; Toledo Commandery #7, Knights Templar, all of Toledo. He was a lifetime member of the NRA and a former member of the Ohio Funeral Directors Association. Mr. Ridgeway attended Alive Vineyard of Licking County.

He is survived by his wife, Jane M. McCain Ridgeway whom he married April 26, 2003; children, Karen (Richard) Wengert of Newark, Jerry Ridgeway of Chillicothe, OH;  step-children, Kelly McCain Coulter of Elizabethtown, PA, Brent Edwin McCain of Columbus, OH; step-grandchildren, Christian (Miranda) Wolgemuth, Jonathan Coulter all of Elizabethtown, PA, Brandon L. McCain and Brittanie Sermon of Etna, OH, Alea McCain of Wooster, OH; step-great-grandchildren, Caleb, Colton, Azela and Kaiden.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara (Dunn) Ridgeway, whom he married October 10, 1965 and who died on October 30, 1997.

Friends may call 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, January 17, 2016 at VENSIL & CHUTE FUNERAL HOME, 1850 West Main Street, Newark.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alive Vineyard of Licking County or Hospice of Central Ohio. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
